Plenty of other wildlife thrives in Akagera’s scenic wooded savannah, hilly grassland, open lakes and marshy wetlands. On dryland, look out for giraffe, zebra, warthog, baboon and 10 species of antelope, from the bull-sized eland to the dainty duiker. Hippos and crocs are common in wetland habitats, which also support the secretive sitatunga antelope and the bizarre shoebill, the most eagerly sought of 550 listed bird species.
