In the lush mountains of Rwanda lies a remarkable opportunity to embark on a life-changing adventure – gorilla trekking safaris. The year 2025 promises to be another incredible chapter in the story of these majestic creatures and the travelers who seek to witness them in their natural habitat.

Gorilla Trekking in the Volcanoes National Park is popular because Rwanda is considered by some to be the best place to see Gorillas in Africa. The park is home to the intriguing but endangered mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas are found in only 3 countries – Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

GORILLA TREKKING PROCESS AND REQUIREMENTS

Visitors gather at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi at 7am, and are allocated a family group on the day according to fitness levels, as well as being briefed on protocols and rules for visiting the gorillas.

Encounters with gorillas as they go about their daily lives are carefully managed, with expert trackers and guides leading small groups of tourists up bamboo-covered slopes to spend a precious and awe-inspiring hour just a few feet away from the gentle creatures.

Gorilla-trekking Permits in Rwanda Cost US $1500 per person per day. The minimum age limit to track gorillas is 15 years old. Only 96 permits are issued each day, and for this reason it’s a good idea to acquire yours ahead of time, to make sure this part of your trip is secured. The cost of your permit goes towards sustainable conservation initiatives whose goal it is to preserve and protect mountain gorillas, conserve the precious natural landscapes, and support the development of communities living around Volcanoes National Park.

10% of the revenue from the permits is channelled towards local communities, to build schools and health centres, as well as roads. There is a compensation fund for local farmers should any gorillas damage their crops, which helps to ensure peaceful co-existence.
