In september Rwanda hosts the world famous Kwita Izina ceremony, which holds a big significance not only for Rwandans but for the rest of the world as it has become a global celebration celebration of nature.
WHEN?
The 20th Kwita izina will be held on friday, 5 Semptember 2025, and celebrate the country’s commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism.
ABOUT KWITA IZINA CEREMONY
Kwita Izina is the Kinyarwanda term for giving one a name. Kwita Izina is modelled off a centuries old tradition in which Rwandans name their children in the presence of family and friends. For the past 20 years, mountain gorillas in Rwanda are born, named and celebrated.
By giving a name to these majestic animals, we give them a value they undoubtedly deserve.
The ceremony is an opportunity to thank the communities that live around Volcanoes National Park, research partners, vets and the dedicated conservationists, rangers and trackers who protect the gorillas. Over the last 20 years, 397 mountain gorillas have been named.
