Rwanda's northern province holds some of the most dramatic landscapes on the continent. While most travelers flock to Rwanda for gorilla trekking, a hidden gem sits just an hour away from the Volcanoes National Park base.
Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are known collectively as twin lakes; they are interlocking bodies of water formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.
The twin lakes were born out of the volcanic fury of Mount Muhabura centuries ago; volcanic lava flows blocked the Nyabarongo River, creating two deep reservoirs trapped against the green hillsides.
Today Lake Burera sits at a higher altitude than Lake Ruhondo, feeding its twin through a spectacular swampy channel.

Bird watching: Bird watching at Burera rewards you with over 200 species against the backdrop of the Virunga mountains. Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo have dramatic terraced hills and quite reedy wetlands that create an incredible haven for both endemic African birds and wintering migratory species.
Boat cruise: the best way to experience the lakes is on the water. With a traditional wooden motorboat or a modern kayak, you glide across the deep blue water, and you will be surrounded by towering terraced hillsides where local farmers cultivate sorghum, potatoes, and tea.
Fishing tour: As dusk falls, the lakes come alive with the melodic songs of local fishermen. They bind three wooden canoes together using long eucalyptus poles to create a stable fishing platform. Watching them cast their nets under the evening sky is a mesmerizing cultural experience, and you can perform it yourself traditionally, guided by local fishermen.
Canoeing and kayaking: canoeing in the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo offers a peaceful water adventure, local island exploration and views of Virunga volcanoes.
