Meet one of Rwanda most exceptional ultra-luxury wilderness retreats, the new sister property of Bisate Lodge, set in the remarkable landscape of Volcanoes National Park. With just four private forest villas, Wilderness Bisate Reserve offers an intimate and highly exclusive stay surrounded by the beauty of Rwanda’s volcanic rainforest and close to the world-famous mountain gorillas. Recognised in Architectural Digest Great Design Hotel, the Reserve brings together remarkable architecture, Rwandan heritage and immersive wilderness
Location
The reserve sits inside an eroded volcanic cone, offering dramatic, direct views of the Virunga Massif peaks, including Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi. It is approximately a 20- to 30-minute drive from Musanze (Ruhengeri), which serves as the main hub for gorilla trekking in Rwanda, about 105 kilometers (65 miles) from Rwanda's capital with just a 2.5 to 3 hours scenic drive via well-paved, winding mountain roads. The lodge is just a short drive from the Kinigi Park Headquarters, where all morning gorilla trekking briefings and group assignments take place.
Rooms
The reserve offers just four massive, ultra-luxury Forest Villas. These cocoon-shaped, thatch-roofed sanctuaries measure a grand 212 square meters (2,280 square feet) each, making them more than double the size of the original sister property, Bisate Lodge. Designed by Nicholas Plewman Architects, the structures replicate the architectural style of Rwanda's historical Royal Palace. Interiors utilize volcanic stone, hand-woven reed mats, bamboo, and custom hand-stitched textiles. Each villa opens into a mud-room foyer (essential for stripping off muddy gear post-trek) leading into an expansive lounge and bedroom divided by a handsome stone partition fireplace. The bedroom features a plush king-size bed (which can be configured into twins on request) angled directly toward towering windows for volcano views.
